The competition may have started the pony car wars in the 1960s, but in 1970 the Dodge Challenger ended them with authority. The Challenger featured an available 426-cubic inch HEMI® V8 engine with dual quad carburetors, 425 horsepower and a pistol grip shifter. With a stat sheet that read more like a rap sheet, the Challenger quickly made a name for itself.
John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge built a reputation on ingenuity, aggression and an unwillingness to compromise. Frustrated with the lack of quality and innovation in the auto industry, they soon began making cars under their own name.
Racing isn't just a way of driving, it's a way of living. The Dodge brand has been involved in motorsports since the early days. The fire-breathing HEMI® V8 engine powered dragsters of the 1960s blazed quarter-mile records. Then in 1970 the Dodge Challenger made its debut. Even though it was a late comer to road racing, with its powerhouse – the 340 V8 engine as a base – it joined one of the most competitive of racing eras with confidence.
In racing, reliability is the key to victory and the HEMI® V8 delivered it in spades. The legend began in 1953 with the introduction of a new 3.9L V8 engine known as the Red Ram. It evolved over the next 11 years to become the 426 HEMI® V8 in 1964 – a powerful racing engine that was banned a year later because it wasn't available to the public. So, in 1966 we put it in our street cars, allowing a return to victory on the track. In 1970 the Dodge Challenger was introduced with this 425-horsepower monster and a new star was born.
